In Part 2 of this conversation with Dr. Luchtefeld, we learn about how he came to be President of the American Equilibration Society (AES), a leading organization of dental professionals that has been around since 1955. Perks of membership include access to scientific meetings, lecture video archives and other continuing education.
Watch until the end for a bonus impromptu conversation with Dr. Alan Mead, a fellow podcast host and longtime friend of Dr. Luchtefeld since the early days of Dentaltown’s online community. Frazer & Associates and many other respected learning organizations.
In 2005 Dr. Luchtefeld obtained his Fellowship in the AGD (Academy of General Dentistry ) and the ICOI (International College of Oral Implantologists). In 2007 he joined the AES – Occlusion, TMD, Comprehensive Care (formerly American Equilibration Society) and quickly rose to leadership. His goal is to help dentists and their organizations question, create, and then inspire their best futures. Jason’s experience in this arena has rapidly grown to include co-facilitating several ASP’s for dentist’s and a corporation as well as leading the process for several dental organizations. Welcome to the 156th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Steven Vorholt (@vorholtdds), co-hosted by Dr. Craig Harder.
Starting a dental business from scratch obviously requires a lot of money, time and effort - and then you need patients to actually come to you. But what if you could bring dentistry to your patients instead? That’s exactly what Dr. Vorholt decided to do, while still coming home every night to his family. Tune in to hear how he maintains work and life responsibilities using his experiences running a private practice, and reflections on lessons learned from a failed business partnership.
Dr. Steven Vorholt:
Dr. Vorholt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and later moved to Columbus, Ohio to attend college. He graduated with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from The Ohio State University in 2013.
Shortly after graduation, Dr. Vorholt started a private practice in the Columbus area. Immersing himself in as much continuing education as possible, he eventually developed a great passion for dental implant surgery. In 2019 after 6 years of building a successful general practice in Ohio, he followed his passion and moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to take a full time position focusing solely on implant placement and restorations and also worked in dental education. He taught courses such as Basic Implantology, Sinus Grafting, Full Arch Overdentures, Implant Complications, 3D Printing Surgical Guides and more. Dr. Vorholt also helped over 1,000 dentists place over 12,000 implants in his time in live surgery education.
In 2021 Dr. Vorholt received his Diplomate in the American Board of Oral Implantology. In 2022 he became a Fellow in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and was asked to present at the AAID Annual Conference for two different workshops and lectures. He lectures nationally on all topics of dental implants and loves to partake in CE from other great educators whenever given the chance.
In late 2022 Dr. Vorholt decided it was time to re-enter private practice. He moved to Santa Barbara California with his family and opened Santa Barbara Dentures and Implants, an implant-focused practice serving the Central Coast of California.

Welcome to the 155th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Steven Vorholt (@vorholtdds), co-hosted by Dr. Craig Harder.
What do you do after your business partnership falls apart? According to Dr. Vorholt, continue to invest in yourself and come out stronger. Like many new dentists, he graduated with heavy student debt, but has never let that get in the way of starting a practice and living life the way he wants. Even when things ended with his partner, he switched gears into education, continuously learning and giving back to his peers, teaching other dentists about implant surgery. Tune in to hear about Dr. Vorholt’s full journey - and a bonus story about the time Irene thought she was being hit on by a random dude at the bar, with a slide deck containing human ears…

Welcome to the 152nd episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Bryan Laskin (@theupgradedental).

Welcome to the 150th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Andrew Johnston (@ataleoftwohygienists).
Irene and Andrew have a lot in common - they are both registered dental hygienists, seasoned podcasters, and passionate about business - so don’t be surprised if you forget who’s interviewing who!
With so much focus on the clinical side of things in school, new hygienists may find themselves unprepared for the ins and outs of job hunting, working with others in a real office, or even running their own practice. What separates a successful dental office from a struggling one, and how can you tell during a job interview? What can you do as a clinician to keep up with the standard of care? Andrew is not afraid to share everything he’s learned from his years as a hygienist, including his most embarrassing mistakes. Plus, hear the story of how Irene got shut down vlogging through restorative school.
Andrew Johnston:
Andrew has been a registered dental hygienist for almost 15 years practicing in private practice and corporate settings. Always with the mind for business he was promoted through the positions becoming a Director of Dental Hygiene in 2020. In 2015 he co-founded a podcast called A Tale of Two Hygienists which started off as weekly shows that evolved into thrice weekly releases. Due to its popularity and monetization strategies, he sold his company to Endeavor Business Media where he currently works as Director of Podcast Content and Strategy. Andrew attributes his success to hard work, a lot of luck, and always keeping the focus on the patient's health outcomes.

Welcome to the 147th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. David Rice (@ignitedds).
Call this episode a book report. Irene’s an avid reader and the new book.“Is Everyone Smiling But You?” David’s new book title can hit a little too close to home. If you’ve ever felt the struggle of balancing your work, health, and relationships with loved ones, you’re not alone. David shares lessons he learned going through the challenges life threw at him.
- How do you lead confidently if you lack organizational skills?
- What’s the right thing to do when an employee needs extended bereavement leave?
- What if your marriage doesn’t feel right from day one?
- Using your instincts to know if people are the right ones for you.
- Follow your gut instinct.
Through exercises and self-reflection, David coaches those who are willing to put in the time and effort to make a change.
Irene read the book while on a outdoor trip, cover to cover while in the woods and brought forward some personal questions that linked to David’s story, this episode is really a perspective shift for those of us who perhaps are also in limbo between achieving “success” and being happy. David discusses how we should be creating 3 buckets of things in our lives in order to full those buckets up evenly, listen to this episode if you’re ready to think about a perspective shift in order to clean things up.
Irene shares a recent tragedy in her practice losing an employee and David provides support with how to continue to be a leader during a real tragedy.
Dr. David Rice:
As seen on the Doctors, founder of the nation’s largest new dentist and student community, Dr. David R. Rice travels the world speaking, writing, and connecting today’s top young dentists with tomorrow’s most successful dental practices. In addition to igniteDDS, David is the Chief Editor of DentistryIQ and leads a team-centered, restorative, and implant practice in East Amherst, NY. With 28 years of practice in the books, he’s trained at The Pankey Institute, The Dawson Academy, Spear, and most prolifically at the school of hard knocks.

Ep 146 - Pediatric Feeding Specialist Teaches Parents Baby-Led Mealtime | Tooth Or Dare Podcast with Toothlife.Irene
Welcome to the 146th episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dawn Winkelmann (@msdawnslp).
Do you remember learning how to eat? Were you a picky eater growing up? What does this have to do with dentistry? Surprisingly, a lot - keep listening to find out!
Infancy is a critical stage of development, a time when babies learn survival skills and good (or bad) habits. Dawn emphasizes the importance of baby-led mealtime, in which babies learn to feed themselves instead of being literally spoon-fed by parents. Eating is a sensory experience with so much going on, and it’s crucial for parents to make sure their child is swallowing correctly, getting enough nutrition, and exposed to a variety of foods to prevent potential issues down the road. Having the right knowledge is not enough however, so Dawn also shows us how her specially designed baby-led utensils help teach tiny humans the safe way to enjoy liquid and solid foods.
Guest Bio:
Dawn Winkelmann is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Pediatric Feeding Therapist specializing in infant swallowing. She has over 25 years of experience teaching parents, therapists, and caregivers how to feed children of all abilities. Through her private practice, Ms. Dawn provides in-home feeding therapy and online coaching, helping parents start solids safely with the baby-led weaning (BLW) approach. She also teaches techniques to help with picky eating, tube feeding, children with special needs (Autism, Down syndrome, etc.), as well as medically compromised kiddos who struggle to eat a variety of foods + liquids.
Ms. Dawn is the inventor of several feeding products, including the award-winning ezpz Tiny Cup & Tiny Spoon (for infants) as well as the Mini Cup & Straw-Training System, Mini Utensils, and Mini Feeding Set (for toddlers), available for purchase at Nordstrom’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and Amazon. She is the co-author of the book Making Mealtime ezpz, which has been highlighted on The View and Shark Tank. Her blogging and product design skills are widely sought-after by pediatric brands seeking expert medical advice.

Welcome to the 142nd episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu (@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Kami Hoss (@drkamihoss).
Calling all aspiring dental entrepreneurs - this one’s for you! This is a long-awaited interview with a truly accomplished dentist, author, filmmaker, and speaker. Irene first learned of Dr. Kami when she saw his film
“The Rise of SuperMouth,” which moved her to tears on the trade show floor. Learn about his start in dentistry, his filmmaking ventures, and how he built a dental practice that’s so fun, it once beat SeaWorld as most popular attraction in San Diego.
Dr. Kami knows the importance of making oral care education accessible to everyone, especially kids. Most of the time, this means making it fun, whether it’s a movie about dentist superheroes, designing dental offices to look like theme parks, or creating toothpaste flavours that make brushing a delight. Find out how Dr. Kami developed SuperMouth as an oral care subscription box, and how it could benefit your practice.
Dr. Kami is reinventing the patient care paradigm in America. Armed with a master’s in craniofacial biology from USC, a doctorate in dental surgery from UCLA, and a post-doctorate in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, he co-founded The Super Dentists with his business partner and wife, Dr. Nazli Keri. Over the last twenty years, The Super Dentists has become one of the leading multi-specialty dental practices in the country, utilizing the latest tools and techniques to provide patients with the safest, fastest, and most extraordinary dental experience ever. One of their newest offerings is SuperMouth, is a customized subscription box designed to send families everything they need for oral health, from specially developed toothbrushes and toothpaste, to games for kids and resources for parents.
Dr. Kami is on the Board of Counselors at UCLA School of Dentistry and is the Chairman of the Board at Howard Healthcare Academy, which he founded due to his frustration with the fragmented healthcare education model at current schools in California. He is also a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the San Diego Dental Society.
As if that wasn’t enough, Dr. Kami is also a well-known author due to his number one best seller, “If Your Mouth Could Talk” — a comprehensive guide that explores various aspects of oral health and orthodontics. He discusses the connection between mouth and body and explains the importance of early intervention in dental issues especially in children. Dr. Kami has been featured in hundreds of media outlets covering topics ranging from the correlation between bad breath and illnesses, to the newest guidelines for children’s dental health. He is frequently featured on NBC, ABC, FOX, NPR, and CBS affiliates nationally and in the San Diego area, where he resides with his family.

140- Oral Surgery, the rough specialty? With Dr. Ben Johnson @PNWOMS
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Welcome to the 141st episode of the Tooth or Dare Podcast with Irene Iancu!
(@toothlife.irene) and this week's guest Dr. Ben Johnson aka @pnwoms.
Ben Johnson was inspired to go into oral surgery by his father, Dr. Carl Johnson, and their lifelong friend and colleague, Dr. Rick Edwards. He saw the differences they were able to make in patients’ lives and wanted to be able to do the same. Now, Dr. Ben works with his father on a daily basis and feels extremely lucky for the opportunity. He shares a similar philosophy with the other oral surgeons at Pacific Northwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons regarding patient care and satisfaction, which centers on providing highly focused, patient-centered treatment.
Dr. Ben strives to treat every patient like they are a part of the family. He understands that coming into the office for oral surgery can be a potentially anxious process, and he works hard to make each patient’s experience as comfortable as possible. Dr. Ben enjoys practicing oral surgery because it provides him with the opportunity to improve patients’ lives.
In this conversation with Dr. Ben Johnson, we chat about the profession of oral surgery, where he went to school, where he grew up and how Ben got to where he is today.
In the world of dentistry, is it perceived as a heavy-handed, “rough-and-tumble” specialty, or is it actually a delicate skill that requires creativity?
Dr. Ben is the kind of person who “likes to be bored at work” - if you call a routine wisdom teeth extraction boring. He shares his wealth of experience as an oral surgeon through stories of bone grafts and implant failures. Hang on to your suction - if you haven’t seen his Instagram feed, be warned because he is NOT afraid to share all the juicy details of a procedure.
Above all, Dr. Ben cares about his patients - getting them a good outcome, making sure they’re comfortable, and being transparent about his practices. His contribution to dentistry doesn’t stop at his patients though. Dr. Ben is also behind the Dental Influencers Alliance (DIA), a network of professionals who promote education and positive dental practices through an annual conference. Learn more about DIA and where it’s happening next in this episode!

138- What is, and how to do oral bacterial testing with Kerry Lepicek, RDH (Part 2)
Thursday Dec 14, 2023
Thursday Dec 14, 2023
Welcome back to the Tooth or Dare Podcast with your host Irene Iancu, as I explore Part 2 of my riveting conversation with Kerry Lepicek, RDH—an esteemed dental hygienist with over 20 years of clinical experience.
This episode is sponsored by our friends at Philips: During this sponsor message, I sit down with
Lindsey Dalley RDH the Professional Education Manager - Canada
We share some tips on communication with patients to set expectations for whitening procedures and pre/post-operative sensitivity management. We discuss some tips to help prevent sensitivity and what the whitening protocol for Zoom should look like in each office. Let's be honest, you've likely taken impressions at the beginning of the appointment then immediately gone into whitening. Well, that isn't a best practice. Tune into this episode to hear more about what the steps to in-office and take home whitening should look like.
In this episode Kerry and I unravel the technical aspects of periodontal therapy and dental hygiene process of care in regards to bacterial testing and how we should be treating patients with even the smallest amount of bleeding, shedding light on the intricacies of practice dynamics and the pursuit of elevated patient care outside of the "you must floss" philosophy.
Join us as we discuss the meaning of "my practice" and dissect the skills and standard of care that distinguish clinicians within a dental office. Dr. Hygiene, aka Dr. Jim Hyland, makes a reappearance in our conversation, highlighting how he pushed and encouraged dental hygienists to elevate their dental hygiene care, introducing innovative procedures and services for the benefit of patients.
I share my personal struggle from a past practice, where I faced challenges providing the level of care I desired. The lack of influence in purchasing essential tools and feeling undervalued due to productivity-based rewards rather than patient outcomes were significant hurdles. This dynamic played a pivotal role in my decision to leave and ultimately led to the opening of my own clinic.
Kerry takes me on a journey through the history of Oravital, unveiling the merger between the Fresh Breath Clinic and Oravital—a pioneering company in bacterial testing. As Kerry passionately describes, this groundbreaking product is now available in Canada, the USA, and other growing countries. With 28 minutes packed with insights, we explore Kerry's role as the Director of Training and Onboarding for offices, discussing the implementation of bacterial testing, the development of the dental hygiene process, and strategies to enhance patient outcomes.
Don't miss out on our discussion about why gums bleed and what to convey to patients, the revelation that the back of the tongue harbors as many bacteria as the teeth, and our visionary ideas on making this aspect an integral part of the new patient experience.
Watch out for engaging videos on my Instagram as I tackle questions like "Why do gums bleed?" and explore the fascinating fact that the back of the tongue is a haven for bacteria, akin to the teeth. Join me in envisioning how to seamlessly integrate bacterial testing into the new patient experience, setting the stage for a higher level of patient care in dental clinics.
This episode is a must-listen for dental professionals seeking practical insights, innovative approaches, and a deeper understanding of the evolving landscape of dental hygiene and patient care. Tune in and join the conversation that goes beyond healthy gums—because healthy conversations lead to healthier smiles.

115.How to keep your Implants off the failure list with Dr. Tim Donley
Monday Apr 03, 2023
Monday Apr 03, 2023
Welcome to the show notes and say hello again to another episode with Dr. Timothy Donley DDS MSD, a periodontist and implantologist based in Bowling Green, KY. Dr. Donley is a highly accomplished practitioner with an impressive educational background, including the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University School of Dentistry, and Indiana University for his specialty training. He is an avid researcher, lecturer, and author on topics of interest to clinical dentists and hygienists. Dr. Donley strongly advocates for dentistry to occupy its rightful place in the healthcare arena, and his current focus is on introducing the new wellness narrative of dentistry. We are excited to have Philips Sonicare as our sponsor for this episode, which was recorded live at their booth in Vancouver, Canada. Joined on the episode are
Cindy Sensabaugh, RDH, MS the Sr. Manager, Professional Relations & Education and Lindsey Dalley the Professional Education Manager of Canada. Both sharing some insightful tips on the new advancements from Philips Oral Healthcare, specifically the Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 3000. we discuss the limitations of conventional floss (Dr. Donley shares his viewpoints on flossing near the end of the episode.) We discuss the challenges patient face and how they are managed by us their trusted dental professionals.
For too long, dentistry has been viewed as a separate entity from the rest of healthcare. But the reality is that oral health is directly connected to overall health. Research has shown that periodontal disease is linked to a number of systemic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. It's time for dentistry to take its rightful place on the healthcare stage and be recognized for the critical role it plays in overall health and wellness.
Dr. Donley shares his views with us on assessment and biofilm management around implant structures and natural teeth as a synopsis to his lecture delivered earlier in the day.
Thank you to both Dr. D and our friends at Philips for sharing such important messages with the Tooth or Dare audience!

On this episode of the Tooth or Dare podcast, I had the pleasure of discussing the innovative Reveal technology joined by Katrina Sanders with Robert Anduze the Northeast Regional Sales Manager at Designs for Vision. In the first 5 minutes of this episode, Robert tells us what to look for, what colour do different bacteria emit and how does this technology actually work?
We recorded this episode in Boston live on the tradeshow floor at Yankee Dental Congress and we had a jam-packed conversation about the future of dentistry and diagnostics with both Katrina and Robert that is new to Irene but will be implemented into her therapy in 2023 which is exciting for her and her team.
Katrina shares the communication with her team members and what it means to be the only one in an office using something like this. Are peeps having FOMO or are they being "judgy?"
The Reveal technology uses fluorescence to identify and target specific bacteria and lesions in dentistry, originating in medicine and wound care. We explored how this groundbreaking approach aligns with my core values of providing excellent care and embracing change. We also discussed the practical applications and benefits of REVEAL technology, particularly in periodontal care, and how it could revolutionize the way dental professionals approach scaling, root planing, and curettage. Throughout the episode, we touched on the importance of being present, enjoying life's experiences, and the need for mindfulness and self-care in our everyday lives which includes elevated technology. What’s the point of doing downward dogs at home if your practice life isn't refined and elevated to provide relief while working smarter, not harder?
Don't miss this fascinating episode exploring the future of dentistry through Reveal technology and precision medicine!

Hold on to your suction; this one is juicy.
In this podcast episode, Katrina shares an incredible story of how she got engaged this past year and opened a wine brand called the Wine Op. Both happen simultaneously and take a considerable amount of time and energy.
Behind her back, her Lumber boyfriend (you've heard of him a lot by now) is secretly planning an extra special wine launch party that comes with a not-so-little accessory. Katrina had no clue despite all the signs pointing to it. Classic Katrina for managing to be completely oblivious.
Furthermore, Irene reveals that she's on track to have a Christmas tree for the first time in five years and explains why she needs to be more conscientious of her personal life this year. Since the last episode, she's also made some life and career changes, including attending the Glo Good/Twice/Let Love Rule mission trip in the Bahamas we encourage you to check out and perhaps consider supporting. The link is in her Instagram bio.
The real shocker hits at the end, when Katrina announces her intention to leave the podcast - which was something both ladies had known for a while but didn't want to share just yet. Despite their divorce from podcasting, they will remain friends, so don't worry; you'll see them at a hotel lobby bar comparing slide decks at the Star of the North, where both ladies will be dropping knowledge live on stage.
Nonetheless, Irene will continue podcasting in 2023 and look forward to bringing lots of fun and educational guests on air, including some live content that will be recorded at the Voices of Dentistry Conference in a couple of weeks.
